Bit of a delay

Sorry everyone, I've been away a little recently, and so I've popped over for a minute to explain what is going on with the game.

Growth 's mechanics have developed. I'd like to say more on this but the game is in development.
       - Should be finished about May
       - Requires more "EXP Adjustable" coding
       - More in depth as to code writing. Possibly need better use of visual design to differentiate code           sections

ZEAL will be made once Growth is finished, Apologies for parties involved with ZEAL,
Growth is being used to teach me game programming.

I just need to complete this in order to make ZEAL worthwhile and in a format that would allow me to raise funding for it quickly.

As you can see.

At the Moment, I am currently;
1) Getting ready for Josh Wheatley's gig April 25th.
We'll be taking preorders on albums and merch.
       Online service updating
         Acquiring full setlist detail
           - Songs
              Name
              Song structure
              Tempo
              Key
              Scale
              Instrumentation
           - Legal check
           - Live performance
2) Acquiring money to fund shop
Make money back in sales online
       Possible Kickstarter?
       Pre sales?
       Sponsorship?
3) Moving to London
     Somewhere between Westminster + Harrow
4) New Look Transfer
     Start of May time
Sort out 4 weekday work only
5) Decide Items
     - Business Cards
     - Lightscribes
       Purchase Lightscribe USB drive
       Recover Lightscribe disks
       CD + Artwork + Origami sleeves (£1) + Plastic [2D](£5) + Gold plaque (Vinyl) (£150)
Find out what is needed + what is for sale.
Ensure Items are purchased once correct thing sold
6) YFM
Wait for Mike to return Cheque for services rendered. (£120)
7) Ciara's Birthday
       Decide Cool item
       Decide Cool place
       Start saving.
8) New Look
        5 Day Weeks
        24 hours shifts,
        5 hours of travel.

A few more things too, but those are the main ones.

Needless to say I may be a little delayed, But It should still be out in time for deadline for the competition.

(Ps. Also this is being done whilist in London, sorry for the delay on that one as well.It organised me very well though I do have to say. Just need working sound equipment to do that, and for that I will need to wage that New Look would provide me. No point starting a hollywood level dub with crap equipment.)

Second week in...

Hey all!

Been a little slow updating the blog, but if you follow me on twitter you'd see that I've put out two music tracks on Newgrounds.com

The Trial of Healing - One of the rooms you may enter to restore your health. Will you be chosen to take trial though?

Explore The Tower - The main "Overworld" theme I guess, this was written in an attempt to capture the vibe i'm going for with the game. While not exactly what I had in mind, it will still take it's place within the game, and may even be due an upgrade if time permits

They've had a bunch of plays, downloads and people seem to like them, so I'm happy. Other peices will be written in this style,

I have been a little stuck elsewhere though. Specifically with the programming.

I haven't really mentioned the mechanics, so I'll explain.

Growth is a 2d platformer that follows the journey of a small creature collecting pieces to take different forms. These different forms allow for a change in gameplay, specifically I want, right from the title screen, to allow the player to climb the walls and the ceiling and create puzzles around the mechanics. Later, as combat and terrain changes these mechanics begin to be removed and given to the player, at their own choice (that will be explained later.

A lot of planning will go into the level designs to account for this, but for now I'm more focused on making sure the mechanics work and are fun to use. I've managed to get basic results when programming, even changing terrain and have attempted to implement gravity. I am now aware that I will need to have the code know when I am touch a wall piece, floor or ceiling in order to be able to climb, walk or stick to them. The issue is, looking at others codes for jump arcs, I don't need to do half of the complex stuff that I am doing. I've been trying to run everything within one behavior (a wad of code that does a thing you want for all you n00bs reading) because of the necessity to activate peices of code when touching certain walls, but I realise now writing this, is that I can still separate the functions (walking, jumping attacking etc) by establishing the platform and wall uses within in each separate behaviorr, keeping things nice and simple to work with.

In an effort to visually show this to myself, I have created this:

It at least gives me a starting point for the week ahead. I want the engine down within the next two weeks so I can draw, level design, sound design and maybe find time to create enemies. Time will tell what I manage to achieve, but i'm still enjoying the bus ride home in anticipation of working on this a bit more!

Developer Diaries

Hi all!

I'm working on a game for the Newgrounds 2015 Stencyl Jam called Growth.

Growth follows the journey of a small creature that seeks to complete the trials of the Tower in order to grow stronger.

I've never used Stencyl before, so this is definitely a learning curve! Have begun to get comfortable with using the engine, shown above, as I can now manipulate the camera. The video kinda explains the basics of how I'm working with it too.

But the game will need some music! I filtered through a million (lol nope, just 1) Google search results and came across a bunch of VSTs that emulate the old school gaming consoles. I won't start working on it until I am further into game development stage, as I can still find some in the Newgrounds audio portal.

I've decided not to focus on the graphics in the same level I did with a picture of Green from ZEAL (still to be completed) but I want to develop it as the character grows to reflect the growth. I quite like the pixelated monochrome look too!

There will be more updates to come over the next few weeks, so stay posted!
